These are powerful words of encouragement and affirmation for one of Ireland’s most prolific and original alternative/roots artist’s - Ger Wolfe.
Already with three albums of self-penned material to his name (“Word & Rhyme”-1998, “Ragged Ground”-2002 and “Heaven Paints her holy mantle blue”-2004) he is now promoting a fourth collection “The Velvet Earth”, which was released in 2006 and recieved a broad welcome from critics and listeners alike.
Ger has put together this stunning collection of songs with his eclectic band “The New Skylarks” featuring Martin Leahy (drums) Paul Frost (double bass), Edel Sullivan (violin), Bríd Dunne (keyboards) and Geoff Ward (brass) with a myriad of special guest musicians including John Spillane. He has toured Ireland extensively for the best part of 10 years, both as a solo performer and with his band.
His songs have a broad appeal and his classic'The Curra Road' has most recently appeared as one of the frontline numbers on Sharon Shannons new c.d.'Renegade' , as sung by Mike Mc Goldrick. Ger's songs have also been covered by Karan Casey (Curra Road) North Cregg (‘Summer at my feet’ etc.) and by DANÚ (‘Standing in doorways’). Some of Ger’s own recordings have also featured on a number of compilations, including "Other Voices - Songs From A Room", "The Diamond Mountain Sessions" and also ”CEOL 07”, a compilation of contemporary songs in the Irish language featuring the cream of Irish talent.
