He tours in the bands of Van Morrison and Bob Geldof, has recorded with everyone from Paul McCartney and Kirsty McColl to Jeff Beck and Rachid Taha and he was a member of cult band the Penguin Café Orchestra – Cork Music Collective are delighted to host multi-instrumentalist Bob Loveday on January 23rd and 24th for two free performances. Bob Loveday brims over with a passion for music that just can’t be contained. Although his childhood was spent in South Africa and Zimbabwe his musical interests are diverse, from Western traditional (Irish in particular), to the musics of North Africa and the Middle East. On Wednesday 23rd January Bob will be the core of a session upstairs in the Roundy on Castle Street which will feature some of Cork’s key musicians. Guests for the night are tipped to include Liam Lyons (traditional flute), Pius McHale (mandolin), Andrea Bonino (slide guitar), Bertrand Galen (cello) and David Whitla of the National Chamber Orchestra (double bass). Many of these musicians have never met each other and none of them have met Bob – but a shared enthusiasm for pushing musical boundaries should make it a night to remember. On Thursday 24th January Bob will meet Hank Wedel (of Princes Street, Open Kitchen and Hank & Ray) to join him for a late gig in the Crane Lane Theatre starting at 11.30pm. Also featuring on the night will be double bass-player Eleanor Healy, recently returned to Cork from America where she had a career as a double bass teacher and led her own jazz quartet. Cork Music Collective was formed by a group of the city’s musicians, promoters and engineers to encourage collaboration and share resources and skills. Its ever-increasing membership meets weekly to network, exchange ideas and plan events.
