Originally from the Antipodes, Brown started out as a project for Michael Cathro's anti-folk, droop-pop ruminations on people, places and ideology in 2009 after the dissolution of previous band, progressive song/soundscape outfit Biff Merchants. Brown's bedroom aesthetic and minimalist-production charm began to lend a raw quality to subsequent recordings and the oft-gaunt style advocated by the band.
After initially releasing the Baraka and the Finish Hims EP in 2009, Brown's hand was forced to make a name change by Michael's pet Rattus norvegicus Mr Brown, and they began plying their trade under this name in live settings around New Zealand.
After recording debut full length bedroom record Brown, Michael relocated to Cork, Ireland in 2010 where the Mould EP was recorded on North Main Street. In 2011 Brown began gigging around Cork and fabrication of a new record is currently in progress
